Heiress, my Mother’s First Guide Dog

One of the fondest memories I have as a child was in the summer of 1971 when my mom came home from Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, California, with a new addition to the family.  Our first dog!  Although Heiress was a working dog, she was a family pet on her off time and we loved her dearly.

She was the only dog around town that could literally go everyplace that we did – grocery stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and on all modes of public transportation.

Heiress ate at the same time every day and had regularly scheduled potty times. So we adjusted our schedule around hers!
